When to go
Season is November to April. December/January bring long days and strong wind; March/April trade shorter days for autumn colors and calmer weather.
What to do
- Laguna de los Tres at sunrise — the red Fitz Roy wall — worth the 4 a.m. start.
- Laguna Torre — ice bergs and Cerro Torre’s needle.
- Glaciar Grande approach — get close to the ice with a guide.
- Estancia day — gaucho culture, horses and asado.
- Autumn lengas — in March/April the forests turn red.
Photography tips
Wind is the main character: use fast shutter speeds, weigh down your tripod, and protect your lens from flying grit. The famous shots need stable dawn light — hence the weather-window game.
Don’t skip the foregrounds — lenga branches, river bends and horses give the peaks scale.
