After several shoots and a creator trip across Bali and the Nusa islands, my formula is simple: sunrise for the icons, midday for the villa, golden hour for the ocean.
When to go
Dry season is April to October. July/August are peak — go May, June or September for the same weather with fewer people.
What to do
- Kelingking at sunrise — the single best view in Indonesia.
- Surf Uluwatu at sunset — or just watch from the cliff bar.
- Seaweed farms of Nusa Lembongan — turquoise grids at golden hour.
- Villa breakfast ritual — book one great villa over three average hotels.
- Snorkel with mantas — Manta Point on a calm morning.
Photography tips
Bali is drone country: cliffs, reef patterns and seaweed farms all need altitude. Fly early — wind picks up by mid-morning and the light gets harsh.
Pack a polarizer for the water and shoot locals at the seaweed farms with respect — buy something, ask, and they’ll pose proudly.
