You camp at 3,600 meters, and all night long the volcano next door erupts. Acatenango is the best adventure-per-dollar hike in the Americas — if you come prepared.
The overnight hike from Antigua faces Volcán de Fuego, which erupts every 15–30 minutes. I shot it from the ridge — here's what nobody tells you beforehand.
When to go
Dry season November to April gives the clearest nights. Avoid full moon if you want maximum lava contrast in your shots.

- Fuego ridge extension — closer to the eruptions — only with a guide.
- Antigua recovery day — coffee, ruins and hot showers.

Photography tips
Night eruptions: tripod, 2–4 second exposures, ISO 1600–3200, and frame the tents for scale. Set up before dark — you won’t feel your fingers later.
Protect gear from volcanic dust and condensation at dawn; a simple dry bag does the job.
